The word Ayurveda is derived from two ancient Indian Sanskrit words: ‘ĀYUS’ – life and ‘VEDA’ - knowledge. It encompasses a system of traditional medicine native to India that considers each patient as a holistic combination of mind, body and soul. Through prevention and cure, Ayurveda aims to improve and maintain health, vitality and the joy of life. Utilising gentle, therapeutic massages for example, the body’s energy is activated while special aromatic oil preparations draw out and eliminate waste deposits from tissue and joints.
The ‘warm stone massage’ utilises heated rock – usually basalt – to improve circulation and relieve muscle tension. The stones are placed in 60°C water till they reach the desired temperature before being placed on the area to be massaged. In addition to the physical muscle manipulation and warmth applied, the nervous system is stimulated through targeted usage of hot and cold. Such massages are often combined with aromatherapy that utilises essential oils to enhance the benefits.
The use of scents and incense for therapeutic and cleansing rituals traces its roots back to the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Aromatherapy today is a form of alternative medicine that utilises essential oils and aromatic plant compounds to improve a person's mood, cognitive function or health.
Thalassotherapy: An oceanic-based group of therapies and applications that traces its history back hundreds of years. The skin especially, is believed to benefit both visibly and structurally through the holistic use of things such as seawater, algae and mud.
