Visitor's Guide

The city which was earlier part of Cologne is located in an idyllic setting between the Rhine and Siebengebirge. The Petersberg as well as the Drachenfels are ideal picnic destinations and for admiring the vineyards on the slopes.

Adenauer's House

On 19 December 1967 the heirs of Konrad Adenauer, his seven sons and daughters, entered into a contract with the Federal Republic of Germany, thereby transferring the Chancellor's property at Rhöndorf to the Federal Government. This created the pre-requisites for setting up the fund called the "Stiftung Bundeskanzler-Adenauer-Haus". Sustaining the memory of the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, who shaped this free democratic state based on the rule of law is not an end in itself. It is the primary concern of the fund to communicate the varied history of the Germans, from the time of the Kaiser's empire to the last third of the last century and hence create understanding for the political principles and social order of our polity. The Stiftung meets this goal primarily by presenting constant exhibitions as well as opening up the residence and garden for public visits. The "Adenauer-Haus" in Rhöndorf, a locality in Bad Honnef, is one of the most visited sights in the Bonn region. It is surrounded by a magnificent garden full of trees, bushes and flowers, wells and stone figures. Adenauer loved roses.

Opening hours:
Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4.30 pm, Monday (except Pentecost Monday), Christmas, New Year's eve, New Year and on Mardi Gras.
Entry free
Last guided tour of the residence at 4 pm.

Siebengebirgsmuseum

A view behind the scenes of the current beautiful and attractive landscape that draws tourists. The most important factors that shaped the landscape are presented: from tertiary volcanoes through millions of years of erosion up to the exploitation of natural resources, especially stone, by human beings. The main area of the permanent exhibition gives an overview of the historical development of the region. From the earliest traces of human settlement to the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany. As a transport artery, the Rhine has continued to shape the living conditions of the inhabitants on its banks for centuries. The most important types of ships are presented with the help of models. The ferries and shipyard operations of a boat building plant in Königswinter augment the subject of region-specific aspects. The subject of timber rafting is accorded a special role. The exhibition also shows two wine presses from the 19th century, typical tools, part of a "Copper Smithy" and a museum vineyard.

Heisterbach Abbey

The order of the Cistercians was established in 1089 as a reform movement within the Benedictine monasticism. Far away from inhabited territories, the monks strived to realise the Benedictine motto "Ora et Labora" (Pray and Work). Bernhard von Clairvaux (1090 to 1153) led the order of the Citeaux to its full glory. On 18 October 1984 the "Stiftung Abtei Heisterbach" was established. It has taken on the task of the upkeep and research on this cultural heritage.

Siebengebirge

For those travelling up the Rhine, this is where the hilly Mid-Rhine landscape begins, shortly above Bonn. The striking silhouette of the mountain range rises high, visible from far away along the bays of Cologne and the Lower Rhine. Seen from close up, it is mainly the "Drachenfels" or the Dragon Cliff , with its cliff wall rising up along Rhine, crowned with ruins, which is one of the most popular destinations of tourists who come to the Rhine.

Nibelungenhalle and Reptile Zoo

Few paces away from the Drachenfels Castle is the Hall of the Nibelungen. A full range of large scale, romantic images and bronze statues from the legend dating back to the last turn of the century are exhibited here. Integrated with the exhibition is the visit to the Drachenhöhle (Dragon Caves) and an adjoining reptiles zoo.

Opening hours:
15 March to 15 November daily from 10 am to 6 pm
16 November to 14 March Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11 am to 4 pm

Passenger ship rides along the Rhine

In the summer months especially it is a great pleasure to discover the Siebengebirge from the water. It is only on a ship tour that one can feel and understand the spirit of the Rhetoromans, and why so many poets have sung the praises of the Rhine landscape. Jetties and piers are found everywhere along the Rhine, but the Drachenfels and the unforgettable panorama of the Siebengebirge are present only in Königswinter and Unkel.

Sea Life Centre Königswinter

Get to know more about life along the Rhine, from the source to its estuaries, in the Big Aquarium in Königswinter. The Sea Life Centre is just a few metres away from the hotel and offers, among other things, the only 360 degree tunnel in Germany.

Opening hours:
Daily from 10 am, last entry at 5 pm
Entry fee: Adults 12 €, children from 3 to 14 years old 9 €
Entrance tickets are available at the reception, with these tickets you don't need to wait in the queue in front of the Centre, but can enter straight away!
